Welcome

to the Department of Biological Cybernetics at the University of Bielefeld.

We are a young, cross-disciplinary research group that combines approaches from behavioural physiology, electrophysiology, informatics and bionics. Our focus in research is on sensory-guided control of behaviour in insects and bio-inspired robotic systems. Our overall goal in science is to provide formal models of the mechanisms underlying the control of natural movement and action sequences.

The Department of Biological Cybernetics is part of the Center of Excellence in Cognitive Interaction Technology, CITEC, and also of the focus group on Neurobiology & Behaviour within the Faculty of Biology.

The Department of Biological Cybernetics has been founded in 1980. The first head of department was Holk Cruse. In 2009, the lab was fundamentally restructured. It is now headed by Volker Dürr.

    Recent Events

  • 2010 May-June: Prof. Sasha Zill is visiting the lab on a research sabbatical. Working title of the collaborative project with Josef Schmitz is: "The function of trochanteral and tibial campaniform sensilla in stick insect locomotion".

  • 2009 Sep: Installation of a new high-resolution motion capture system Vicon MX10, specially adapted for kinematic analysis of insect locomotion.
