Welcome
to the Department of Biological Cybernetics at Bielefeld University

We are a young, cross-disciplinary research group that combines approaches from behavioural physiology, electrophysiology, informatics and bionics. Our focus in research is on sensory-guided control of behaviour in insects and bio-inspired robotic systems. Our overall goal in science is to provide formal models of the mechanisms underlying the control of natural movement and action sequences.

The Department of Biological Cybernetics is part of the Center of Excellence in Cognitive Interaction Technology, CITEC, and also of the focus group on Neurobiology & Behaviour within the Faculty of Biology.

The Department of Biological Cybernetics has been founded in 1980. The first head of department was
Holk Cruse.
In 2009, the lab was fundamentally restructured. It is now headed by Volker Dürr.
