Forschungsinteressen

Mein Hauptinteresse gilt der Ökotoxikologie, einer relativ jungen Forschungsrichtung, die sich aus mehreren Disziplinen (Ökologie, Toxikologie, Chemie) zusammensetzt. In der Ökotoxikologie geht es zum einen um die Untersuchung von schädlichen Wirkungen von Umweltschadstoffen auf Ökosysteme, indem Interaktionen zwischen Schadstoff, Umwelt und Organismen und Mechanismen der Wirkung aufgeklärt werden. Zum anderen geht es um die Entwicklung von Methoden zur Erfassung von Wirkungen, die zur ökologischen Risikobewertung angewendet werden kann.

Die Nematoden, ein zentrales Forschungselement in Walter Traunspurgers Arbeitsgruppe, eignen sich aus vielen Gründen hervorragend für die ökotoxikologische Forschung und Risikobewertung, u.a. wegen ihrer hohen ökologischen Relevanz (Vorkommen in aquatischen und terrestrischen Ökosystemen; Schlüsselpositionen im Nahrungsnetz) und ihrer hohen Individuendichten (bis zu 40 Millionen Nematoden / m2). Außerdem steht mit Caenorhabditis elegans einer der bestuntersuchten Modelorganismen zu Verfügung, um unter standardisierten Bedingungen Laborexperimente durchzuführen.

So konnten in den letzten 20 Jahren wichtige Nematoden-basierte Werkzeuge zur prospektiven und retrospektiven Risikobewertung von Sedimenten und Böden entwickelt werden: der normierte Biotest zur Erfassung der Toxizität von Chemikalien Wasser, Sediment und Boden (DIN/ISO-Richtlinie ISO 10872:2012); der NemaSPEAR[%]-Index zur In-situ-Bewertung von Nematoden-Communities in limnischen Sedimenten; Labor-Mikrokosmensysteme zur kontrollierten Effektbewertung auf Community-Ebene. Mit diesen Testsystemen konnten bzw. können in vergangenen und aktuellen Projekten verschiedene Schadstoffklassen (Schwermetalle, Polycyclische Aromatische Kohlenwasserstoffe, Pestizide, Nanopartikel, Mikroplastik) hinsichtlich ihrer  Toxizität auf Nematoden auf verschiedenen ökologischen Ebenen untersucht.
