Our research philosophy is to create complexes with specified functions and properties. In this respect, each of our projects starts by a rational design of a complex with targeted functions / properties by using known structure-function relationships. As this usually leads to complicated and unprecedented structures, the rational design on a piece of paper requires strong efforts for the synthesis of yet unknown multidentate and directional organic ligands and their metal complexes. The successful synthesized complexes are structurally characterized, and then investigated with regard for their desired functions / properties. This process either results in the targeted function / property or provides improved structure-function-relations which allow a rational improvement of the ligands and complexes of the next generation.
