Glycomimetics Come Full Circle
Carbohydrates are key recognition elements for a wide range of cellular communication processes, including development of the nervous system. Despite much recent progress in the field of oligosaccharide synthesis, generation of carbohydrate-containing compounds for biological exploration or therapeutic applications remains an arduous task. Sewald, Bächle et al. (Angew. Chem., Int. Ed. 2006, 45, 6582-6585) now describe the design and synthesis of novel glycomimeticcyclic peptides that stimulate neurite outgrowth, pointing to a promising approach for developing novel therapeutics for neuron regeneration.
