GradSchool Chemistry and Biochemistry - Requirements
Doctoral degree students are expected to complete all requirements
within three years after admission to the doctoral studies. The PhD
thesis should be completed in the sixth semester. The PhD regulations
of the Department of Chemistry as a general rule limit the regular
dissertation time to three years for candidates holding a master,
diploma, or any other comparable degree obtained in Germany or abroad.
Requirements for a successful completion of the Graduate School are:
- Successful completion of the PhD studies (thesis, defense).
- 30 credit points have to be acquired according to the following
scheme:
- Seminars and Colloquia (10 credit points, CP):
- Chemical Colloquium: Attendance at least 10 times per year, 1 CP per year, a total of 3 CP
- Workgroup Seminars (1 CP per semester, 6 CP in total)
- Participation at two Graduate School Workshops (total: 1 CP)
- Presentations (5-9 CP):
- GS Workshop presentations: 2 CP per presentation, a maximum of 4 CP can be obtained
- Group seminar presentations: 1 CP per presentation, a maximum of 3 CP can be obtained
- External presentations (Conferences etc.): One poster presentation (1 CP) and up to two oral presentations (2 CP per presentation) at conferences or symposia
- Teaching and Softskills (8-12 CP):
- Mentoringand supervision of students in practical courses, exercise courses and tutorials (8-12 CP)
- Participation at softskill training courses (up to 4 CP)
- Professional Training (3-7 CP):
- Participation at summer schools, conferences, ring lectures, lab training courses and similar courses

Note that you need to allow macros in these documents in order to use them appropriately.
These older requirements apply to students of the graduate school who started
before February 15th, 2009. Upon request, these students can choose to fulfill the study program according
to the newer requirements.
Requirements for a successful completion of the Graduate School are:
- Successful completion of the PhD studies (thesis, defense).
- 30 credit points have to be acquired according to the following
scheme:
- Ring lecture: six blocks with 0.5 credit points each (3 CP)
- Colloquia: The students have to attend at least ten colloquia per academic year (3 CP)
- Seminars: regular attendance at the group seminars is obligatory (6 CP)
- Practical courses and additional qualifications (12 CP)
- attendance of a practical course (0.5 CP per day)
- organization of a practical course for the participants of
the Graduate School (1 CP per day)
- activity as a tutor/assistant in practical courses/tutorials
for undergraduates (2 CP per term, max. four times)
- Workshops (6 CP)
- two lectures at workshops of the Graduate School or one talk
at a workshop of the Graduate School and one at an external
symposium (2 CP each)
- attendance of four further workshops of the Graduate School
(full time attendance required, 0.5 CP each)
After successful commencement the student will receive a
certificate in English and German where the participation
(mentioning all completed practical and theoretical modules) is
listed and certified.
