Welcome to the online dictionary “InterAmerican Wiki: Terms - Concepts - Critical Perspectives” of the Center for InterAmerican Studies (CIAS) at Bielefeld University. This project was initiated in cooperation between the International Doctoral Program Global Social Policies and Governance at Kassel University and the CIAS, and is now hosted by the latter since 2013 as part of the BMBF-project The Americas as Space of Entanglement(s).
The Americas are characterized like no other region by parallel and conflicting dynamics marked by the transregional and transcultural experiences of colonialization and its enduring power to shape social, cultural, environmental, political and economic relations. Migratory processes, tourism flows, transnational corporations, circulation of cultural goods and practices, provide just some prominent examples.
This peer-reviewed and open-access online dictionary charts the emerging field of Inter-American or Hemispheric American Studies by discussing key terms and concepts as well as theoretical and methodological approaches from a broad range of interdisciplinary perspectives. Our aim is to generate and share knowledge for scholars, students, and social actors in ways that account for the social, cultural, environmental, political and economic differences and conflicts within the Americas as well as for the ever-increasing and multi-layered processes of integration and transnationalization. Every entry of the dictionary aims to take into account the different meanings and historical dimensions concepts can have in the North, in the South or in between.
We hope that you enjoy reading and we would like to encourage you to comment the entries!
