The Faculty of Educational Science at the University of Bielefeld has built a strong reputation over the years as a faculty renowned both within Germany and internationally for its outstanding research. The faculty is consistently rated high in national rankings—for example, the CHE ranking, which places the faculty among the best education programs in Germany at the very top of the rankings, as well as in the FOCUS ranking, which has placed Bielefeld in first place among all university faculties of education in Germany twice consecutively.In the faculty, research and teaching activities are carried out in ten Working Groups (AG1-10). There are also cooperative research projects conducted through various Centers and Research Units in the faculty that guarantee diverse opportunities for networking and international collaboration. Through a thematic structure that differentiates the educational sciences into its various subdisciplines, the faculty provides a foundation for addressing specific research questions. The faculty’s educational research covers the “classic” focal areas—teaching, social and school pedagogy, as well as adult education—while also focusing on socialization, guidance, further education, media, youth and migration pedagogy, and cultural work—research fields that have earned the faculty at Bielefeld high renown. Another feature that makes the Faculty of Educational Science in Bielefeld unique within the German research landscape are its research units Laboratory School and Senior Secondary College. Furthermore, special needs education has been made an integral part of innovative teaching and research at Bielefeld in the field of school pedagogy.
