About the Chair

The chair of General and Economic History is responsible for teaching the history of the modern age (14th–19th centuries) and the postmodern era (20th and 21st centuries). Its research focuses primarily on economic developments of the late 19th century and on their consequences for the German and, more broadly, the European economy. Topics include:

  • From New Industry to the New Economy: Business and Society in the 20th Century

  • Research on Corporate History

  • History of Economic and Social Policy

  • Causes and Determinants of Institutional Change

  • History of European Integration

  • Business and Society in East Westphalia-Lippe

  • Business and Science

Continuing the development of the Bielefeld tradition of historical social sciences, the chair uses an interdisciplinary approach to pursue an analytical orientation to the relationship between business, power and politics, and culture.
