History as Profession

What do I want to do after I graduate? What can I do with a degree in history? It is probably never too early to start thinking about such questions. We shall help you to find your own answers, give you information on possible professions, and organize appropriate internships.

All undergraduates taking history as their major subject have to attend a practice-oriented seminar called "Orientierende Praxisstudien". In this class, they find out what the labour market has to offer them. Active involvement in this information process is required: working in groups, the students themselves interview professionals from selected non-university work fields. This work style also trains transferable key competencies such as how to conduct discussions, how to plan a project, and how to present one's results both orally and in writing.

The study regulations require every Bachelor student to complete an internship. Our database contains a whole range of options for this. Of course, we also advise students personally when they have any queries or problems, or when they simply want to check whether an internship they have organized themselves meets the necessary criteria.

We also offer regular seminars combining teaching with an internship. These are often cooperations with major non-university institutions where students can, for example, set up an exhibition or assist in a TV production.

Our research colloquium "Public History" creates a space for intellectual exchange within the university and with our partner institutions. Lectures help students to develop their career orientations, offer a chance to discuss ways of teaching history, and encourage reflection on how to convey historical issues to the general public. These colloquia are usually held every second Thursday throughout each semester and are open to anybody who is interested. Exact times and places are announced by notices throughout the faculty.
