Background

The number of people in need of nursing care in Germany is continuously increasing. Elderly citizens with migration background are the group with the highest growth rate. Normally female family members take care of their relatives who are in need of care. But changes in family structure and the increasing number of women in work have affected the situation of home care. In addition the households are getting smaller. Especially for women with migration background the situation gets more difficult and providing nursing care becomes a higher burden. Because of problems with the foreign language and the lack of information there are again obstacles towards the use of professional help and offers for people in need of care.

The “Pflegeforschungsverbund” has its focus on patient orientation. In this context the saba study will access Turkish persons in need of care and their relatives who provide care. The intervention encourages empowerment and self-management of persons in need of care and their relatives who provide care. It will help them to obtain help and support. This should influence the health status and the quality of life in a positive way so that they get more autonomy in their daily care situation.
The study helps Turkish persons in need of care and their relatives who provide care to get the same chances and possibilities for access to the German Health System as the majority population.

Proceedings

We use the method of “sharing stories” as intervention strategy (Greenhalgh et al. 2005). Health mediators will facilitate weekly group meetings of Turkish care givers. During these meetings the care giving relatives are able to increase their knowledge and information by talking to each other. Health and care related parameters, autonomy and the quality of life are measured in the person needing care. Stress and empowerment will be measured before and after the intervention period in the persons who provide care. The intervention will be evaluated.
