Violence research is poorly institutionalised in many countries that are most heavily affected by conflict and violence. Empirical expertise from the Global South is critically lacking in international violence research.

The pilot project "Violence Research and Development" integrates higher education capacity development in violence research of the Global South and multilateral comparative research. An edited volume summerizing the main results in currently under review.

Since completion of the pilot project, we are engaged in three new projects:

1. Violence related norms, attitudes and beliefs of young men in high-risk urban neighborhoods (DFG grant)

2. Institution-Centered Conflict Studies (collaboration with Free University Berlin).

3. International Panel on Social Progress (IPSP): Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Heitmeyer has been appointed to serve as a member of the "International Panel on Social Progress". IPSP is compiling a "Social World Report", along the lines of the reports on climate change. Heitmeyer is the German member in Chapter 10 "Violence, Wars, Peace und Security". He is collaborating with Prof. Wiewiorka (France), Dr. Stepanova (Russia), Prof. Shinoda (Japan), Prof. Aggestam (Sweden), Prof. Bellamy (Australia), Prof. Wallensteen (Sweden), Dr. Baake (UK). Under the leadership of Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, IPSP will publish its next report in 2017. Another meeting of the chapter took place in February 2016 in Paris. The next meeting is scheduled for January 2017 in Lisbon.
