- Philosophy of Law
Véronique Zanetti's research focuses on the philosophy of international relations. This branch of philosophy addresses, among others, questions of migration, secession, global poverty, justification of military power and their normative implications for the moral rights and duties of states and other international actors. Hence, there are close contacts to other disciplines, notably international law, political science and sociology.
2015 Véronique Zanetti received the Opus Magnum grant from the VW-Stiftung for a monography on moral and political compromises, with the title: varieties of compromises. In compromises, people refrain from doing what they consider the right thing to do, settling instead for a course of action they consider no more than second-best. This is above all problematical in case of moral convictions: It is difficult to describe coherently the attitude of someone who settles form oral compromise, and who thus appears to flout moral requirements for political or moral reasons. The monography examines the various dimensions of compromise and confront the results with applied cases.
Since 2015, Véronique Zanetti has been member of the ZiF directory board (Center for Interdisciplinary Studies). She has been the executive director of the ZIF since 2017
