Research profile

At the faculty of Sociology, research areas in sociology and other social science disciplines are extensively and substantially represented. Over the last few years, the theme globality/ world society has become an important focus of research. This focus concentrates on research carried out on the theory of world society, globalisation of social policy, migration, politics as well as micro-structures in world society. This research focus is supported by the faculty’s own Institute for World Society Studies where members from other faculties are also active as well as by the Research Training Group “World Society – Making and Representing the Global” which works in close cooperation with the Institute for World Society Studies. Another focus of research is to be found in the analysis of the role of science and media in contemporary society where mutual reactions between contemporary society and other social areas are of particular interest. In this context, the faculty cooperates significantly with the interdisciplinary Institute for Science and Technology Research. Carrying out research on the role of organisations in society, the sociology of work and science as well as inequality research all represent further research focuses at the faculty. Additionally, the faculty participates in projects at the Institute of Women’s and Gender Research as well as in the Collaborative Research Centre 584 “The Political as Communicative Space in History”. The differentiated thematic profile of research is reflected in the research focuses of the areas of study of the faculty.
