The Faculty of Sociology offers several possibilities to do a doctorate. The Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology (BGHS), which functions as a cooperative graduate school for History and Sociology and is promoted by the federal Initiative for Excellence, offers a structured and multifaceted PhD programme. The doctorate takes place in the context of the International PhD programme and envisages a study programme including four colloquia, four PhD seminars and two general skills courses. Furthermore, there exists the possibility to do a doctorate without a course of study. Instead of seminar obligations a annual presentation in a thematically relevant colloquium or PhD seminar and a semi-annual counselling interview with the supervisor on basis of dissertation report are required. The International PhD programme as well as the doctorate without a course of study are regulated by the PhD regulations from September 1st, 2009.
