[pdf]
While in the Turkish-Islamic Immigrant milieus in Germany the third and fourth generation is emerging, we have not enough research about the - continuously changing - religious praxis and socialization in these milieus.
Two dissertations of doctoral students from Turkey respond to this situation:
„Comparison of Religious Socialization and Faith Development of Muslim Adolescents in Turkey and Germany“
The aim of Aygün‘s dissertation project was the comparative reconstruction of religious socialization and development of Muslim adolescents in Germany and in Turkey using the faith development interview and taking into consideration also the context of family, social environment, and religious education. Thus, while methodologically the classical instrument according to the Manual for Research in Faith Development (2004) has been used, the research has not only attended to structural development, but taken into account the contents of religious representations such as images of God as they characterize the vairous aspects of faith. Field work has been conducted in Germany and in Turkey. The comparison of both Islamic samples yields insights in how religiosity and images of God develop in different cultural contexts; this reflects the influence of modernization and transformation of religion in the immigrant situation. Results are especially relevant for religious education in the multi-religious situation in Germany. The dissertation with the title "Sozialisation und Entwicklung bei muslimischen Jugendlichen in Deutschland und in der Türkei: Empirische Analysen und religionspädagogische Herausforderungen" is available online at Bielefeld University Library. Publication as a book is in preparation.
"Intergenerational Changes in the Religiosity of Turkish Immigrants in Contemporary Germany“
The aim of the dissertation project of Sakin Özisik is the inter-generational comparison of the religiosity in Turkish-Muslim immigrant families. The focus of the research is the analysis of the differences between the first, second and third generation. The method used in this study is the faith development interview which is administered and evaluated according to the third edition of the Manual for Faith Development Research (Fowler, Streib, Keller 2004). However, not only the structural characteristics will be taken into account, but also the contents such as images of God, world views and the semantics of symbols, in order to more comprehensively assess the differences between the three generations. Field work has been conducted in Germany. This research yields new perspectives on Muslim religiosity in the immigrant situation in which the inter-generational transmission of religiosity may have changed considerably.
