The main focus of this workshop will be to bring together specialists in quantum experimental and theoretical physics, mathematics, computational science, information science, philosophy ... which are related to the exciting and subtle developments of the 'Quantum World'.
Soon, we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of matrix mechanics by Heisenberg, Born and Jordan. Quantum Science has reached a very mature stage, in theory and experiment. And, yet, rather harsh controversies and confusing debates concerning the deeper meaning and the correct interpretation of quantum mechanics are continuing until today. The lack of a clear, coherent view of quantum mechanics as a physical theory of nature contrasts strangely with the huge success of uncountable applications of this theory to the discovery and design of all kinds of new and not so new technologies that are shaping our daily lives. Given the present situation, we felt that it was time to organise a programme dedicated to deciphering the message of quantum science. Such a programme was organised by us and took place at the ZiF of Bielefeld University in 2012.
During the past five years, there has been encouraging progress in our theoretical understanding of the foundations of quantum mechanics, numerous experimental tests have been carried out, and new quantum devices have been developed. Thus, the purpose of a one-week conference to be held at the ZiF in 2017 is to give an overview of results and insights in the following areas of Quantum Science, with emphasis on developments that have occurred during the past five years:
