Dynamics and Change
2nd Annual Seminar of the Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology (BGHS), 8-10 February 2010
At our Second Annual Seminar, 30 young scholars presented their projects from the point of view of dynamics and change. This involved the following questions:
What factors lead to change or trigger a certain dynamics? What do structures contribute to change? What is the role of institutions and "organizational fields" (Paul J. DiMaggio) in change? What prevents change and causes barriers?
In discussing these issues, we not only looked at structures, mechanisms or institutions. We also asked: What is the importance of chance and contingency for questions of dynamics and change?
A number of distinguished scholars addressed these issues in their keynotes. The opening talk was given by Jan Assmann, an egyptologist from the University of Heidelberg.
