Educational Careers. Self-Definitions and External Definitions in Early Modern Times

Date: March 11 - 13, 2009

Organizers: Juliane Jacobi (Potsdam), Jean-Luc Le Cam (Brest), Hans-Ulrich Musolff (Bielefeld)

The diversity of byways (Willem Frijhoff) of advanced levels of learning in early modern times grounded on ego documents and a variety of prosopographic data was the theme of the conference. The relationship of self-description and information from others about education and learning and the formation of the individual and collective patterns of education and learning in Europe was one of the topics challenged by the interdisciplinary approach. The impact of religious denomination as well as gender were considered in the papers on individual as well as on collective learning.
