Stochastic Spin Systems: models, theory, simulation and real world applications

The goal of the workshop was to provide a platform for experts from different scientific disciplines for a discussion and exchange of ideas about the theory, simulation and applications of nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations based models for spin systems.
Spin type models arise in a wide range of applications including smart materials, electronics, magnetic recording, renewable energy, biology, biotechnology, medicine, etc. Due to the complexity of the underlying physical processes, the classical, deterministic models are not capable to reliably reproduce the full range of physical situations. This includes, for instance, the evolution of spin system on the nanoscale and/or the evolution at critical temperatures, for which there exist important modern applications. Therefore, the central theme of the workshop revolved around various aspects of stochastic spin systems, i.e., models which include random fluctuations. Of particular interest to the workshop were stochastic spin models for the description of ferromagnetic materials and liquid crystals, which are able to overcome the limitations of their deterministic counterparts.
The speakers included experts from mathematical and numerical analysis, applied mathematics as well as from theoretical, experimental and computational physics. The program consisted of 13 talks which were organized into five sessions (morning and afternoon). The speakers in each session were chosen from complementary disciplines and the sessions included longer breaks to facilitate discussion and exchange of ideas. Throughout the workshop the discussions were lively, and, on the first two days, continued beyond the dinner until late evening.
Overall the workshop was successful in initiating exchange of ideas between theory and applications. Over the course of the workshop several prominent topics have been identified that would benefit from a more in-depth interdisciplinary examination. These include, for instance, ultrafast spin dynamics, discrete versus continuous spin models, analysis and approximation of singular stochastic models, fast stochastic simulation, stochastic control of spin systems and rigorous multiscale approaches. It has been agreed by the participants that a similar interdisciplinary program in the future, including a larger number of participants over a longer period of time, would be of considerable benefit to all involved disciplines.
