Multiscale analysis and modelling of collective migration in biological systems

The main goal of this workshop was to match up experts from of a quickly growing research area dealing with collective migration in biological systems at cellular and organismic scales. Collective migration is a spectacular phenomenon observed when systems consisting of many moving and locally interacting units self-organise into patterns, especially coherently moving groups. Meanwhile, it has been realized that at the cellular scale, collective migration plays a crucial role in highly structured, multi-cellular organisms, especially in embryonic development but also in patho-physiological responses (e.g. wound healing, immune response or cancer invasion).

The workshop addressed two main topics: First, the presentation of experimental data, and methods used for reverse-engineering and modeling interactions between units from their trajectories. Understanding how the particular nature of information conveyed during interactions (e.g. visual, physical or chemical) may give rise to specific or similar dynamical collective patterns is of particular importance. Complementing the case studies by theory, the second workshop focus was on the characterisation of unifying principles behind the diverse manifestations of collective migration phenomena on the basis of mathematical models. Indeed, different kinds of interaction laws at the individual scale may give rise to similar collective dynamical patterns. There are many important issues: (1) to what level of description one has to go in order to build explanatory models that make the link between individual and collective behaviors?; (2) do all these models belong to the same universality class? A particular focus of the workshop was on multiscale analysis of the mathematical models for collective migration. This analysis allows to predict behaviours at one scale, e.g. the scale of the population, from known behavior at other scales, e.g. the individual interaction scale.

Scientific activity has recently grown very quickly in data acquisition, in the modeling of collective behavior in multi-cellular systems and animal groups, and in the development and multiscale analysis of models for collective motion.

Therefore, the workshop was intended to promote a fast exchange of ideas and the establishment of fruitful interdisciplinary collaborations between biology, medicine, mathematics, and physics experts in the collective migration field.
