ZiF Workshop

Human dignity as a non-disposable characteristic

Date: 5 – 6 December 2018
Convenors: Christoph Horn (Bonn, GER), Dietmar von der Pfordten (Göttingen, GER)

On December 10th, 2018, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights celebrated its seventieth birthday. It is one of the earliest legal texts which mentions and protects the inalienable human dignity. Today, there is an increasing skepticism in philosophy about this idea. Human dignity is sometimes reduced to a contingent prohibition of humiliation. This working group gathered different philosophical, legal, and theological approaches to the inalienability of human dignity. During the two days, manifold and sophisticated ways were discussed in which the ideal of an inalienable human dignity of the Universal Declaration and the German Basic Law can be justified and defended.
