2019

  • April 2019: Congratulations to Michael Weber on successfully defending his PhD on the Identification and functional characterisation of seminal fluid proteins in a simultaneously hermaphroditic flatworm!
  • January 2019: Congratulations to Bahar Patlar on successfully defending her PhD on the Evolutionary quantitative genetics of seminal fluid!
  • We welcomed our new Technical Assistant Sonja Schindler.

2018

  • December 2018: We said goodbye to Renate Feist. For more than 40 years she worked as a Technical Assistant in the Faculaty of Biology and held the department of Evolutionary Biology together. Thank you for your commitment!
  • June 2018: We welcomed Navina Lilie. She started her PhD on a project embeded in the newly funded SFB, supervised by Tim Schmoll and Peter Korsten.
  • We also welcomed Erasmus student Yasin Yarin from Istanbul.

  • May 2018: We welcomed Athina Gavanozi from the Democrit University (Greece) as a ERASMUS+ guest student. Athina worked on acoustic communication in Orthopterans, supervised by Klaus Reinhold.
  • January 2018: Congratulations to Dr. Pablo Valverde on the completion of his PhD project on Phenotypic plasticity and condition-dependent trait expression in sexual ornaments and body colour in the alpine grasshopper Gomphocerus sibiricus.

2017

  • December 2017: We said goodbye to Dr. Alicia Jarrige. For one year she joined our group and conducted her Career Bridge project in collaboration with Dr. Tim Schmoll. We wish her all the best for the future.
  • November 2017: We hosted the 11. International Macrostomum Meeting.
  • Congratulations to postdoc Dr. Matthias Galipaud on taking up his new position as a postdoc in Hanna Kokko?s group at the University of Zurich.
  • October 2017: Welcome to our new postdoc Dr. Rienk Fokkema who joined the department to conduct a Career Bridge project in collaboration with Dr. Tim Schmoll and Peter Korsten.
  • September 2017: We hosted the 110. Jahrestagung der Deutschen Zoologischen Gesellschaft. More details here.
  • January 2017: Prof. Dr. Klaus Reinhold gave a public lecture "Evolution – alltäglicher als man denkt" organised by the Natural History Museum (namu) and Naturwissenschaftlicher Verein für Bielefeld.

2016

  • December 2016: Welcome to our new postdoc Dr. Alicia Jarrige who joined the department to conduct a Career Bridge project in collaboration with Dr. Tim Schmoll.
  • October 2016: PD Dr. Tim Schmoll has been appointed Interim Professor for Evolutionary Biology and Systematics at the University of Ulm.
  • October 2016: Congratulations to Dr. Shaghayegh Soudi on the completion of her PhD project on Lochmaea beetle speciation! Shaghayegh has now moved to Canada to begin a postdoc project on the genomics of local adaptation at the University of Calgary.
  • October 2016: Postdoc Dr. Yumi Nakadera has begun her Alexander von Humboldt research fellowship on seminal fluid in snails.
  • September 2016: We welcomed Anais Edme from the University of Olomouc (Czech Republic) as a ERASMUS+ guest student. Anais worked with Tim on the heritability of bird sperm traits.

  • September 2016: Steve was a plenary speaker at the Annual Meeting of the German Andrology Society in Saarbrücken.

  • July 2016: Congratulations to Dr. Lucienne Eweleit on the completion of her PhD project on speciation in bushcrickets. Lucienne has been awarded with a postdoc bridge stipend from the University of Bielefeld.
  • August 2016: Öncü Maraci joined the group as a postdoc, working on adaptation to climate change.
  • May 2016: Our former Emmy Noether group leader Prof. Dr. Holger Schielzeth has begun his new Professorship of Population Ecology at the University of Jena. Congratulations Holger! We also said goodbye to Dr. Petra Dieker and Anasuya Chakrabarty, both of whom have joined Holger in Jena. Good luck everyone with the new start!
  • April 2016: We welcomed Fran Rebrina from the University of Zagreb (Croatia) as a ERASMUS guest student to work on the evolutionary ecology of grasshoppers and bushcrickets.

  • April 2016: Congratulations to PD Dr. Tim Schmoll on obtaining his habilitation.
  • We were pleased to welcome Marlène Goubault to our group as a visiting ERASMUS guest lecturer hosted by Tim.
  • February 2016: We hosted the Simultaneously Hermaphroditic Organisms Workshop at the ZiF.

2015

  • November 2015: Klaus Reinhold was elected as a member of the DFG Review Board 203 Zoology.
  • We will host the Simultaneously Hermaphroditic Organisms Workshop from 17-19 February 2016. More info here.
  • Congratulations to Athina Giannakara for completing her Master thesis on "The effect of sperm competition on the speed of spermatogenesis in the hermaphroditic flatworm Macrostomum lignano".

2014

  • A warm welcome to Dr. Yumi Nakadera, joining us as a postdoc to work with Steve Ramm on seminal fluid in snails, and to Pavlina Opatova, a visiting PhD student from the Czech Institute of Vertebrate Biology working with Tim Schmoll on phenotypic plasticity of avian sperm traits.
  • Matthias Galipaud has joined the department as a postdoc working on theoretical approaches to understanding phenotypic plasticity. Welcome, Matthias!
  • Petra Dieker has joined the department as postdoc working on fitness quantification in grasshoppers. Welcome, Petra!
  • Bahar Patlar and Michael Weber have joined the department as PhD students working on the function and evolution of seminal fluid in flatworms. Welcome both!
  • In mid March we hosted a workshop of the DFG-Nachwuchsakademie OFFSPRing at the ZIF.

2013

  • Ulrike Lampe successfully defended his PhD thesis on Effects of anthropogenic noise on male courtship signalling and female response in the grasshopper Chorthippus biguttulus. Congratulations, Ulli!
  • Nils Cordes successfully defended his PhD thesis on Sexual selection and the causes of behavioural differences. Congratulations, Nils!
  • Steven Ramm has been awarded a research grant from the DFG (German Research Foundation), to study the functional and evolutionary genetics of seminal fluid.
  • Ulrike Lampe is the winner of the 2012 Haldane Prize, awarded by the British Ecological Society to the best paper by a young scientist in the journal Functional Ecology. ->Read more
  • Amy Backhouse joins our department from the University of Cambridge as a new Technical Assistant.

2012

  • Klaus Reinhold got elected dean of the Faculty of Biology at Bielefeld University.
  • Steven Ramm's research on the evolutionary ecology of sperm will be supported by a Career Integration Grant, funded by the Marie Curie Actions of EU Framework Programme 7.
  • As part of the Emmy Noeter Programme, the German Research Foundation (DFG) supports research on the evolution of sexual ornaments in Gomphocerus sibiricus, headed by Holger Schielzeth. ->Press Release (in German)
