About Orkan Okan
Orkan`s professional background is based in pedagogy and educational science. He is a former primary school teacher for German language, mathematics, and social sciences and humanities for primary schools, including sociology, politics, history, geography and economy. He finished his studies in 2014 at the University of Duisburg-Essen with the degree 1. Staatsexamen. Since 2013, he is a member of the research team of the Centre for Prevention and Intervention in Childhood and Adolescence (CPI), which has moved to Bielefeld University in 2014.
Allocated in the Department of Socialisation Research, he is interested in research on educational and health related socialisation processes, health promotion and primary prevention in children and youth, health literacy and mental health literacy, as well as in inequality and disparities related research questions and methods of childhood studies. He is engaged in national and international communication, networking and transfer activities, collaborative inter-sectoral action, synergy and capacity building, identifying relevant partners, and working in partnership with other networks and organisations where appropriate. Another area he is committed to is the acquisition of research funding.
Within the Health Literacy in Childhood and Adolescence (HLCA) research consortium, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), he is working on health literacy theoretically and methodologically. He is also responsible for the project management of the HLCA.Orkan is member of several networks, for example:
