Alberta OWL Cooperation
In the Alberta OWL cooperation, universities in OWL (Ostwestfalen-Lippe, Germany) and postsecondary educational institutions in Edmonton (Canada) work together to exchange and develop knowledge. The focus of the cooperation is on interdisciplinary close collaboration in research, as well as the exchange of students and trainees. Multilateral relations between all partners involved are intended to supplement, combine and expand the strengths of both regions.

OWL - Partnering Science and IndustryWith around 120,000 companies, Ostwestfalen-Lippe in northwestern Germany is a region with an industrial focus, in which business and science are closely connected. The collaboration of a wide variety of high-performance companies and universities makes OWL an important science location with more than 65,000 students. Internationality plays a central role here. Several so-called "hidden champions", big world market leaders, are based in OWL. The two largest cities Bielefeld and Paderborn complement each other in many ways.
Bielefeld University is a young research university with 24,000 students and more than 2,700 employees. With 115 subjects in humanities, natural sciences, social sciences and technology, Bielefeld University abides by the principle of interdisciplinary teaching and research according to the guiding concept of 'transcending boundaries'.
There are 6 English-taught master's courses and other international courses, such as double degree programs. With 20,000 students and more than 2,400 employees, Paderborn University is the second largest educational institution in OWL. Over 60 courses are offered in the 5 Faculties of Cultural, Economic and Natural Sciences, as well as Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics including Bachelor, Master and PhD programmes.
Presently, 9 internationally-oriented English master's programs are offered, in particular, in computer science, technical, engineering and natural sciences. Also many other courses contain significant international elements, in particular, the double-degree Bachelor in European Studies together with the Université du Maine, France. As a result, the number of international students is constantly rising.
Our academic staff includes ERC grant holder, Leibniz prize winners and other awardees performing excellent research with a strong focus on interdisciplinary. Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences (FH Bielefeld) works closely together with industrial communities and businesses in the region, with regards both to teaching and applied research. FH Bielefeld has over 100 partnerships worldwide and is constantly expanding its international cooperations. Its 10,000 students are enrolled in 60 degree courses across three campuses in Bielefeld, Gütersloh and Minden.
