Professor of Service Science in the Life Sciences (W3)
according to the “Jülicher Modell”, starting as soon as possible.
The successful candidate will perform research and academic teaching in
the area of Service Science. She or he will cooperate with the
bioinformatics research groups of the Faculty of Technology and be head
of a research group of ZB MED in Bielefeld. ZB MED is the central,
national service centre for professional information and research
support in the life sciences. Its application areas include medicine,
health science and nutritional, environmental and agricultural
sciences. One core research area of the Faculty of Technology is
bioinformatics, from algorithmics via software development to service
and training activities, with an emphasis on support of microbial
genome research in biotechnology and medicine. The latter is mainly
performed in the context of the German Network for Bioinformatics
Infrastructure (de.NBI) whose coordination unit is located at Bielefeld
University’s Center for Biotechnology (CeBiTec).
We are looking for a candidate specialized in solving questions as they
arise when offering computational services in the life sciences. This
includes practical experience with operating large compute
infrastructures, or the integration and processing of big data sets,
gained for example as PI in large-scale projects; it also includes
conceptual experience, for example in the development of methodologies
for the computational support of life science research. The applicant
should be highly qualified in at least one of these areas.
We expect that the existing priorities of ZB MED (intelligent
information processing, research data management) and of the Faculty of
Technology (bioinformatics, intelligent systems) will be complemented
by the planned research activities. Further, we expect commitment with
the establishment of a knowledge environment for the life sciences in
cooperation with other research groups of ZB MED, in particular the
implementation of a national solution offering bioinformatics services
to life scientists and – in conjunction – the perpetuation of the
German ELIXIR node.
According to the “Jülicher Modell”, the professor will be teaching 2
LVS (hours per week) at Bielefeld University while on leave to ZB MED.
The acquisition of third-party funding and the coordination of
large-scale projects are expected.
Formal requirements for appointment, as detailed in paragraph 36 of the
“Hochschulgesetz” of the state of North-Rhine Westfalia, are completed
university studies and doctoral studies in a relevant area (preferably
computer science), additional scientific achievements, which will be
evaluated exclusively and thoroughly during the appointment process, as
well as pedagogical and didactical qualification.
Applications from qualified handicapped persons are explicitly
encouraged.
Bielefeld University has received a number of awards for its
achievements in the provision of equal opportunity and has been
recognized as a family friendly university. The University welcomes
applications from women.
Applications are handled according to the provisions of the state equal
opportunity statutes.
Applications should comprise:
- Curriculum vitae
- Complete list of publications
- List of 10 most important publications
- 2-page concept of research and teaching
- Summary of teaching experiences with current evaluations, if available
- Summary of research experiences and successes
- Summary of successful grant applications of the last 5 years
- Copies of academic degrees
