Help us shape the new Medical Faculty at Bielefeld University: interprofessional, future-oriented, diverse and strong in research and teaching

The Faculty of Medicine intends to fill the following endowed chair of the von Bodelschwinghschen Stiftungen Bethel at the earliest possible date:

W1 Junior Professorship for Clinical Neuropsychology with Focus on Epilepsy Research

Bielefeld University stands for interdisciplinarity, high quality research and teaching, and the further development of a gender-equitable university culture. In 2019, the largest scientific institution in the region Eastern Westphalia Lippe celebrated its 50th anniversary. A wide variety of subjects and people work together in an interdisciplinary way to ensure innovative research and teaching at the highest level. The approximately 25,000 students have access to a differentiated range of subjects in the humanities, natural sciences, social sciences and technology. In addition to its international orientation, Bielefeld University is excellently networked in the city and region, which is characterized by medium-sized companies.
Bielefeld University is currently developing an innovative Faculty of Human Medicine with an interdisciplinary focus on individual and population medicine. Teaching is scheduled to begin in the winter semester 2021/22. Clinical training will take place in cooperation with specialized clinics of various hospitals of the University Hospital OWL of Bielefeld University, which is currently being established.

As holder of the professorship, you actively participate in the development of the medical research profile of Bielefeld University. A strong focus is placed on "Medicine for People with Disabilities and Chronic Diseases". We expect the willingness to participate in the development of this research profile. In particular, we would like to see an intensive willingness to cooperate in one of the currently planned research areas:

  • Brain, Disability, Participation
  • Intelligent Systems, Assistance, Interprofessional Networking
and/or in one of the medical fields of research to be developed:
  • Microbial Diversity in the Human Habitat
  • Data Science for Medical Care
Own work priorities in these areas are advantageous.

When building up the Faculty of Medicine, you will work closely with the founding dean, the dean's office and lecturers from the other disciplines. In addition, co-optation with the Faculty of Psychology and Sports Science is planned for structural integration.   

The appointment is initially limited to three years with the possibility of extension for a further three years after a positive interim evaluation. The evaluation procedure is regulated in the Bielefeld "Guidelines for Junior Professorships".

The future jobholder represents clinical neuropsychology in research and teaching. The research focus of the applicant should be in the field of neuropsychology. In the future, a focus on epilepsy research is expected. Experience in this area would be an advantage.

The infrastructure of the Society for Epilepsy Research and the Mara Hospital (Clinic for Epileptology) of the von Bodelschwinghschen Stiftungen Bethel can be used for research work by the professorship.

In teaching, contributions to relevant modules in medicine and psychology are expected.

Requirements for the position are:
  • a relevant university degree in medicine or psychology
  • pedagogical suitability
  • a qualified doctorate
  • relevant teaching and research experience.

  • Willingness to participate in further development and collaboration in the research area "Brain, Disability, Participation”
  • Willingness and motivation to actively participate in further developing the medical curriculum and to engage in research and teaching cooperations within the Medical Faculty and across faculties - especially with the Faculty of Psychology and Sports Sciences
  • Commitment to the promotion of young talents.
The process of building up the Faculty of Human Medicine at the Bielefeld location offers a great deal of creative freedom and is associated with a variety of challenges. In addition to the usual application documents and information, we ask you to submit a 2-page teaching and research concept, which refers to the planned profile of the faculty as well as to the previous relevant experience of the applicants. The concept papers should also include current and/or future gender and diversity specific content relevant to the advertised professorship. In addition, we expect a brief outline of your planned gender equality activities, especially with regard to the promotion of young female academics and the compatibility of career and family.
