Social World Regions - the European Union and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in comparison

The concept of 'world regionalism' has gained increasing attention in global social policy research. Based on the notion of the social dimension of globalisation, this dissertation compares the social identities of two important world regions: the European Union (EU) and the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This includes an overview over the social identities of both world regions: How they describe and define the "social" of their respective Unions, which differences and similarities are in place, and which logic follows the "social model" - a liberal, conservative or social-democratic perspective. Against the general opinion that ASEAN is a pure economic union, I will demonstrate that both regions have social structures. These descriptions rise on the strength of a literature review and of European and ASEAN documents.
