  • European Conference on Educational Research: At the European Conference on Educational Research, which takes place this year in Glasgow, Scotland, from 25th to 28th August, Orkan Okan of the IZGK will take part in a symposium of the working group '08 Research on Health Education on the topic of health literacy and will present and discuss the GeKoOrg-School project with the participants. Further participants are Prof. Dr. Kevin Dadaczynski from the University of Applied Sciences Fulda, Catrine Kostenius, Luleå University of Technology & Norrbotten, Sweden) as well as Colette Kelly, Margaret M.   • Meeting of the Research Group der Schools for Health in Europe Foundation (SHE): This year's meeting of the Research Group of the Schools for Health in Europe Foundation (SHE), which was to have taken place in Helsinki, Finland, from 10 to 11 June, was cancelled due to coronavirus. The meeting will be made up for in November 2020. Further information can be found here.

  • European Public Health Week: This year the European Public Health Week will take place from 11 to 15 May. The Public Health Week is organised annually by the European Public Health Association (EUPHA). Further information and opportunities to participate in the Public Health Week can be found here.
  • 146. World Health Assembly der WHO: This year, the 146th World Health Assembly of WHO will take place in Geneva, Switzerland, from 17 to 21 May. As part of the event, the UNESCO Chair Education and Health will offer a workshop on school health promotion entitled 'Developing the capacity of ALL schools to promote the current and future health of students' on 20 May from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Further information can be found here.

  • UK-Ireland Health Literacy Conference: Orkan Okan of the ICHL will give a keynote address on 'Health Literacy in Childhood and Adolescence' at the UK-Ireland Health Literacy Conference. The conference will take place on 20 April 2020 in King's Hall at Newcastle University in England under the theme 'Health for Life' Developing and promoting healthy environments across the life course'. Other keynote speakers are Prof. Dr Gerardine Doyle from University College Dublin and Anastasia Koylyu from WHO Europe, Technical Officer, Division of Noncommunicable Diseases and Promoting Health through the Life Course.   • 5th Health Conference District Uelzen: Orkan Okan from IZGK will be a keynote on the topic 'Health Competence in Childhood and Adolescence 5th Health Conference District Uelzen - Prevention and Health Promotion in Childhood and Adolescence' at the Kurhaus in Bad Bevensen on 22 April 2020 and a workshop with the participants. Other guest speakers will be Thomas Altgeld and Lea Oesterle, Landesvereinigung für Gesundheit Niedersachsen. The event will begin with greetings from the Minister of Social Affairs Dr. Carola Reimann, Lower Saxony's Ministry of Social Affairs, Health and Equality and District Administrator Dr. Heiko Blume from the district of Uelzen.   • Kick-off event 'GeKoOrg-Schule': On 26 March 2020 the kick-off event of the new IZGK project 'GeKoOrg-Schule - Gesundheitskompetente Schule: Organisationsentwicklung für die Stärkung der Gesundheitskompetenz im Setting Schule' will take place at the University of Bielefeld. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG) from 10/2019 to 10/2022. During the event, the project, the project objectives and the framework planning until 2022 will be presented. The meeting also serves as an opportunity to jointly found the Network Health-Competent Schools and to get to know all project partners in general.

  • Meeting of the Research Network 'Health Literacy in Childhood and Adolescence (HLCA)': The 9th and last meeting of the Research Network 'Health Literacy in Childhood and Adolescence (HLCA)' took place on 20 and 21 February 2020 at the University of Bielefeld. Representatives from the Robert Koch Institute, the Freiburg University of Education, the University of Duisburg-Essen and Bielefeld University took part. The HLCA association is planning a final conference in 2021, to which invitations will be issued. Furthermore, the 5th HLCA Summer School will take place in 2020.
  • Development of a WHO European Region action plan on health literacy: In February, WHO Europe launched an initiative in Copenhagen to develop a European action plan to promote and strengthen health literacy for the 53 European Member States. It is supported by an international advisory board, including Prof. Dr Doris Schaeffer and Dr Orkan Okan from the Interdisciplinary Centre for Health Literacy Research (IZGK) at Bielefeld University.   • Health literacy in the digital age: The expert conference with politicians, practitioners, scientists and journalists took place on 4 February in Berlin. At the conference, which was organised by the Federal Ministry of Health in cooperation with the Alliance for Health Literacy and the National Action Plan for Health Literacy, over 350 women participants discussed the consequences of the digital transformation for strengthening health literacy. People and projects of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Health Competence Research (ICHL) were centrally represented there. Further information can be found here.

  • Project start 'GeKoOrg-School': On 1.10.2019 the project 'GeKoOrg-School' will start at the ICHL. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Health from 1.10.2019 to 30.09.2022 and examines health literacy in the school setting in a model project.

  • Foundation: The Centre for Interdisciplinary Health Literacy Research was founded.
  • 2nd International Symposium 'Gesundheitskompetenz: Forschung - Praxis - Politik': The 2nd International Symposium 'Gesundheitskompetenz: Forschung - Praxis - Politik' will take place at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on May 2nd and 3rd. Coronavirus pandemic and health literacy: The coronavirus is currently spreading worldwide. During this pandemic, health literacy must be given special emphasis in order to prevent the new virus from spreading more rapidly. Further information can be found here.

COVID-19 and Infodemic: The COVID-19 pandemic is accompanied by the so-called "Infodemic" (Infodemic). Finding good information, protecting oneself from fake news and untruths and making sensible health decisions in these crises are the main focus. Further information can be found here.

Interview Children's health literacy: Children and young people are an important target group for the promotion of health literacy. However, little research has been done into this area. The Pharmazeutische Zeitung spoke to Orkan Okan of the ICHL about the current situation in Germany. Further information can be found here.
