Scientia Artis Martialis is an interdisciplinary platform that researches and reflects on martial arts in their cultural, social and human dimensions.

The world of martial arts is rich in manuals, training plans and detailed instructions on the techniques of individual styles. But away from the mats, wrestling and dojos, an often overlooked dimension opens up: the deeper cultural, social and human significance of martial arts. Especially in German-speaking countries, literature on these perspectives is rare - yet they are as relevant as they are fascinating.

Scientia Artis Martialis is dedicated to precisely this neglected side of martial arts: a research-based, reflective look at martial arts as part of our culture, linked to history, Philosophy, sociology, psychology and geography. Martial arts are not only an expression of physical discipline, but also a reflection of human experiences, values and developments. They were created by people - and still characterise people today.

Scientia Artis Martialis is a digital medicine project of the medical school OWL at Bielefeld University. The platform sees itself as a collection, network and starting point for essays, food for thought and research that enable a holistic, interdisciplinary view of martial arts. Here, practitioners, researchers and the curious will find space to get to the bottom of what lies behind the technique.
