The aim of the funding line for Digital Clinician Scientists is to partially release physicians with an interest in digital medicine from clinical tasks in order to create scope for research activities and thus to promote the start of a scientific medical career parallel to further training as a specialist. The thematic focus is on research on physician action with digital health applications ("app on prescription"), digital projects in the field of covid-19/infection/pandemic and artificial intelligence.

The funding enables the implementation of an own scientific objective accompanied by the management of the working group 4 "Digital Medicine" as well as the specialist hospital management embedded in a qualification program for innovative research and teaching.

The application deadlines for the pilot phase with two funding modules have already passed. Below you will find all information on the closed call.

The call is aimed at physicians from the 1st to the 4th year of specialist training with a completed or demonstrably close to completion of a doctorate who would like to work in Working Group 4 "Digital Medicine" with the help of a short-term leave of absence (usually 50% over 2x6 months; but at least 30% with a corresponding extension of the term). This is to enable an entry into a scientific medical career path as a Digital Clinician Scientist by preparing the implementation of an own scientific project. In addition to the exemption, material resources of max. 2,500 € can be applied for. The maximum funding amount per person is €50,000 (exemption and material resources).

Applications are open to physicians who are in the 1st to 4th year of their specialist training and have completed their doctorate or are verifiably close to completing it. Funding is provided for a physician who is supported by the working group 4 "Digital Medicine" and is released from work to carry out his or her own research project in digital medicine (usually 50% release over a maximum of 3 years). In addition to the exemption, personnel and material funds of max. 5,000 € per person per year can be applied for. The maximum annual funding per person is €50,000 (exemption, personnel, material and travel funds).

The prerequisites for funding in both funding modules were a clear scientific objective, a doctorate that had been completed or was about to be completed, existing or prospective employment at the UK OWL or in a practice in OWL, including participation in further training as a specialist (1st to 4th year), and the approval of both the responsible hospital management or the employer in the practice and the management of Working Group 4 "Digital Medicine".
