Master of Science in Epidemiology (MSE)

Epidemiology is a fundamental discipline for medicine and public health. It provides tools to learn about the etiology and consequences of diseases, the possibilities of prevention and treatment, and the risk profiles of individuals and populations. The Master of Science Programme is the first postgraduate training programme in Germany leading to the international degree of a Master of Science in Epidemiology. The primary task of this postgraduate education is to offer an advanced training in research methods in epidemiology for graduates of different disciplines. As a reaction to the new demand for well equipped epidemiology professionals the Master of Science Programme in Epidemiology was devised as a cooperation of the Universities of Mainz and Bielefeld.

At the Universities of Bielefeld and Düsseldorf, three modules about principles and methods of epidemiology and biometry will be offered in the term of november 2007 to may 2008:

The courses will take place in the week-end and can be attended by students who work.

By successfully attending these three modules 24 ECTS points can be acquired. Students who are interested in gaining a master´s degree are offered the opportunity of continuing their studies at the University of Mainz. At Mainz, the credit points acquired at Bielefeld and Düsseldorf will be acknowledged for the “Master of Science in Epidemiology”. Students who have successfully attended the courses at Bielefeld and Düsseldorf will still have to attend courses corresponding to another 18 ECTS points at Mainz and they will have to write a master thesis at Mainz, Düsseldorf or Bielefeld.

 

Module 1: Principles of epidemiology

This module offers an introduction into epidemiology and into SAS (Statistical Analysis System). SAS is the statistical programme used by most epidemiologists.

Conceptual outline:

  • History of epidemiology
  • Epidemiological measures (e.g. prevalence, incidence, rates, ratios)
  • Concepts of causality in epidemiology
  • Epidemiological study designs (case control, cohort, cross sectional, clinical trial)
  • Bias in epidemiological studies
  • Confounding and interaction
  • Cancer registries
  • Critical reading of epidemiological papers
  • Introduction into SAS

Module 2: Principles of biometry

This module offers an introduction into biometry.

Conceptual outline:

  • Descriptive statistics
  • Introduction into the theory of probability
  • Random variables and distributions
  • Estimating and confidence intervals
  • Principles of testing (momentum estimators, maximum likelihood)
  • statistical tests
  • errors of α and ß type
  • introduction into the linear model: regression analysis, analysis of variance
  • training with SAS

Dates: 25.1.–27.1.08; 8.2.–10.2.08; 22.2.–24.2.08

Assessment: written exam (14.3.08)

Module 3: Advanced methods of epidemiology and biometry

  • Methods for the analysis of the dynamics of diseases
  • Types of bias
  • Methods to control confounders (matching, stratification)
  • Multiple linear regression
  • Logistic regression
  • Poisson regression
  • Cox regression
  • Regression analysis with SAS
  • Time series analysis
  • Survival analysis
  • Sampling strategies
  • Analysis of spacial data
  • Meta analysis

Dates: 14.–16.3.08; 28.3.–30.3.08; 11.4.–13.4.08; 24.4.–27.4.08; 14.5. –18.5.08

Assessment: written exam (30.5.08)
