Teaching in the Social Sciences
One of the characteristic features of the Research and Teaching Unit on Teaching in the Social Sciences at Bielefeld University is that it uses a variety of integrative approaches to teaching and learning in the social sciences and that it is involved in international collaborations with and networks of researchers and teachers across Europe. The combination of integration and internationality results in a unique “Bielefeld profile” of social science teaching that is based in a tradition at Bielefeld University that goes back to the 1970s. Today, the Research and Teaching Unit combines traditions of teaching in political science and economics, though without the intention to dissolve either area. In addition, it pursues the innovative project of establishing social science teaching as a new subdiscipline, one that has largely been neglected in the past. Since its beginnings, the Research and Teaching Unit on Teaching in the Social Sciences has always implemented the principle of problem-oriented interdisciplinarity, both in the form of interdisciplinary teaching and in the form of inter- and transdisciplinary research.
