General information: Founded in 1834, the University of Bern is a comprehensive university consisting of eight faculties that are further divided into several departments and institutes. The Department of Social Sciences belongs to the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences. At the department, the Institute of Political Sciences is one of three institutes. This institute primarily focuses on the areas of politics and administration, which represent two thematic core disciplines of the university. The institute additionally addresses sustainability, health and medicine, and material and universal or intercultural knowledge. Overall, the Institute of Political Sciences attaches great importance to the combination of strong fundamental and empirical research, which is also reflected in its teaching.

The Bachelor´s degree in Social Sciences is commonly offered by the Institute of Political Sciences, the Institute of Sociology, and the Institute of Communication and Media Science. It introduces basic terminology, covers the contents and general theories of various fields in the Social Sciences, and teaches qualitative and quantitative research methods. Students can additionally specialize in the areas of Political Sciences, Sociology, or Communication Science and Media. Note that exchange students from the partner institute should focus on Political Sciences. A detailed course overview is available on the website of the study programme BA Social Sciences.
Study terms: The winter term usually starts in mid-September and ends mid-December. The summer term usually starts in mid-February and ends mid-June. Exams are held in three sessions along the academic year: at the end of January, in the beginning of June and in September.
Other information: The University of Bern offers incoming students a range of support services, such as housing, language courses, and introductory welcome sessions.
