Language of instruction: Italian. Some courses are offered in English, and a few study programs are given completely in English. Based on the Common European Frame of Reference (CEFR), the minimum desirable level of language proficiency is A2 for Italian and B1 for English. Although A2 is permitted, higher levels of proficiency in Italian are especially recommendable, because the English course offering is usually limited.

General information: Founded in the 6th century, Bologna is a university city in northern Italy where important monuments from various historical periods can still be found today. The University of Bologna was founded in 1088, making it the oldest university in Europe. With more than 84,000 students in 33 faculties, it is the most popular institution of higher learning in Italy, and its 273 partner insitutions for international exchange contribute to its international study environment. The university infrastructure is multi-campus with the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences located on the Campus di Forlì in the center of the city.

Bielefeld University and the University of Bologna also offer a Double Degree MA Sociology. Further information on the study programme and apllication is available here.
Study terms: The winter semester starts regularly in mid September and ends in mid-February. The summer semester starts regularly in mid-February and ends at the end of July. Exams are held respectively in January/February or June/July.
Other information: The University of Bologna offers a wide range of services to assist exchange students in obtaining insurance, finding accommodation, and registering for language courses or welcome days. There is also a Buddy Programme for international students and a service of accommodation portal for exchange students, technically similar to AirBnB. The university rents student accommodation in Forlì and holds cooperative agreements with private renters. The Campus in Forlì has a very good infrastructure as well as a lively and active student environment with sports, music and cultural events. The Erasmus+ Student Network (ESN) organizes activities regularly. Additional information for exchange students is available on the university’s website in the area International.
