General information: The University of Helsinki regularly receives high international recognition and sees its responsibility in the areas of teaching, research and social relations. It aims to shape professionals with high social and academic skills who will in turn contribute to the development of the society and take responsibility as actors of social change. The Faculty of Social Sciences includes 13 disciplines, three research centres and networks, as well as thematic disciplines from the areas of Economics, Social Sciences, and Political Sciences. An overview of all disciplines is available on the Faculty´s website. The Faculty consists of two departments: The Department of Social Research and the Department of Political and Economic Studies. The Department of Political and Economic Studies is the biggest research institute at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Helsinki with about 50 teachers and 2,000 students. It offers courses in six different disciplines: Economy, Development Studies, Social and Moral Philosophy, Economic and Social History, Political History, and Political Science. The cooperation especially concentrates on the area of Political Sciences.

The Masters programmes (Advanced Studies) deepen the understanding of theory and empirical application of democracy in global, national and local contexts. Students in these study programmes focus on the challenges and changes of democratic systems and their actors within the areas: general politics, administration and organizations, and world politics. The English MSc programme European Studies enables students to profoundly understand the historical, political and cultural diversity of the ancient continent. Different lines of specialization give students many opportunities to adapt their schedule according to their personal study interests. Courses taught in English for the individual programmes are available in the course finder WebOodi or on the Faculty´s website. Besides the Political Science study programmes, there are a great number of study programmes in the other disciplines of the Faculty of Sociology, which can be found in the Degree Finder of the university.
Study terms: Summer and winter semesters consist of an intensive phase at the beginning, two teaching periods and a final examination phase. The winter semester starts regularly at the end of August and ends in mid-December. The summer semester starts regularly at the end of January and finishes at the end of May. Exams are held at the end of October and December or at the beginning of January and May.
Other information: The University of Helsinki offers exchange students support through assistance in finding accommodation, Finnish language courses, and a Mentoring Programme. There are additionally many cultural and sports offerings for students at the University. There is an Erasmus+ Student Network in Helsinki that organizes activities and trips.
