Study cycle: Master

Language of instruction: Portuguese. There are few courses offered in English. The required level of Portuguese is at least B1 or English B2 following the Common European Frame of Reference (CEFR). In addition, a higher level of Portuguese language proficiency is recommended, because the majority of courses are offered in Portuguese.

General information: ISCTE-IUL is a public university in Lisbon that was founded in 1972 with the aim to educate, conduct research and develop projects that contribute to the development of society and the international community. The ISCTE is considered to be one of the most innovative and dynamic universities in Portugal. About 9,000 students study contemporary issues from the areas of public administration, economics, and the political and social sciences. The School of Sociology and Public Policy is divided into four departments (Social Research Methods, Sociology, Political Science, and Public Policy and History), which offer 16 study programmes in total.

The MA Sociology deepens fundamental theoretical and methodological knowledge of Sociology, and offers further possibilities to specialize in diverse areas of research on modern societies. The curriculum focuses on institutions, processes, social change and its actors, social problems, and movements of modern societies. It applies these topics for analysis on the global level as well as in specific local contexts in the areas of work, education, migration, communication, organizations, and family. Study term: The winter semester starts regularly at the end of September and ends in the beginning of February. The summer semester starts regularly at the beginning of February and ends in July. Exams are held respectively in January and June.

Other information: ISCTE-IUL offers exchange students support services to find accommodation, provides Portuguese language courses and introduction days as well as a mentoring programme.
