General information: Ankara, with a population of more than five million, is the second largest city after Istanbul and the capital of Turkey. The city was founded in pre-Christian times and has developed over the centuries to become the flourishing economic center of Turkey. Middle East Technical University (METU) is one of ten universities in Ankara. Founded in 1956, it has about 25,000 students at five faculties and two schools and has five graduate schools. One of the most famous universities in the country, it has a campus with an elaborate infrastructure, providing university shuttle transport, sports and swimming facilities, and a wide variety of student activities. The Department of Sociology offers study programs at all levels, which are enriched by departmental and nondepartmental electives, and it is connected to public and private institutions in the region.

The courses offered by the Department of Sociology enable students to acquire basic and general theoretical, methodological, and historical knowledge. Both introductory and advanced courses are offered in sociology, social anthropology, research methods, and the theories and history of sociology. In addition, a wide range of optional courses are available for those wishing to specialize in different fields, such as family, urban/rural sociology, work/economy, policy, religion, gender, culture, criminality, social movements and social change, migration and globalization, and the sociology of science. A detailed list of courses is available on the department’s website. There is a special course offering for exchange students. Only evening classes can not be chosen by Erasmus+ students.
Other information: METU offers Incoming Students various support services, including housing, language courses, and orientation events. The university disposes on campus single-, double- and multi-bed-rooms that can be rent by exhcange students. There are sports and cultural clubs and many free time activities organized by students associaltions. Study terms: The winter semester usually starts in late September, and the summer semester usually starts in early February. Orientation days and language courses for interational students start usually two weeks before the classes begin.
