General information: Maastricht, one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, is located near the country’s southern borders with Germany and Belgium. It is a popular center of education, leisure, and culture and is characterized by an international study environment. Maastricht has many museums and is known for its theaters and music academies, as well as for its traditional ceramic handicrafts. In terms of European history, it is important as the birthplace of the European Union. The University of Maastricht was founded in 1976 and is known for its internationally oriented study programs and alternative teaching methods based on the concept of problem-based learning. It has about 16,000 students, almost half of whom are international students. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is one of six faculties at the university.

Course offerings: Our Erasmus+ Partner in Maastricht, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Maastricht University, offers the following BA course programme:

While the BA programme Arts and Culture is related to the field of languages and cultures, the European Studies Bachelor’s program focuses on the study of the European continent from historical, sociopolitical, and economic perspectives. The problems of international relations and the development and dynamics of the EU are the center of discussion. Both programmes offer major parts or even the whole study programme in English. An overview of the course offerings is available on the faculty’s website. As an exchange student you can choose one of the four majors of the BA Arts and Culture (Political Culture, Media Culture, Cultures of Knowledge and Technology, or Literature, the Arts and Culture) or choose from the course offer of the BA European Studies. The course programme for exchange students is available online.

Study terms: The study system in the Netherlands is divided into different periods per semester. The winter term at the University of Maastricht has two periods and usually starts in early September and ends in mid-December. The summer term consists of three periods and usually starts in early January and ends in early June. Exams are held at the end of each period.

Other information: Maastricht University helps students to find suitable accommodation and provides room in its student guesthouses, where waiting lists are comparably short. The university furthermore provides new students an online pick-up service, a Welcome Day and Buddy programme.
