General information: The University of Umea is the fifth oldest university in Sweden and is inspired by an innovative and international study environment. The institution puts special emphasis on the relation between education, research, and cooperation and innovation, which makes the university a space of encountering new ideas that can be developed and realised. This strategy is part of the reason for the university’s excellent reputation in worldwide university rankings. The Department of Political Sciences forms an important pilar and has about 40 professors and 350 students. It was founded in 1965 and offers teaching from BA to PhD levels. Since 2003 the department also holds the field of Peace and Conflict Studies.

The department understands politics as structures of power, and the Political Sciences as a comprehension and systematic analysis of cooperation and conflicts of societal organizations and their power. A major focus in the studies of Political Sciences in Umea is therefore oriented along questions of democracy, power and the execution of power structures along different societal contexts and categories. Courses relate to Global and Regional Governance, EU Politics and the position of Sweden within the EU, as well as theoretical approaches of the Political Sciences.
Peace and Conflict Studies are dedicated to the emergence, structures and processes of political violence and wars. But they also analyze the dynamics and processes of peace-building that help to prevent or end this violence, and focus on strategies to fight violence and wars.

Study terms: the winter semester starts regularly at the end of august and ends in mid-January. The summer semester starts regularly in mid-January and ends at the beginning of June. Exams are held respectively at the end of each course and not at the end of the semester.
Other information: The University invites students to participate in the orientation week before the semester starts. Furthermore, the University helps to guide international students in finding accommodation, and offers Swedish courses, a Mentoring-Programme and a „Survival Guide“ for download that contains all information in detail for incoming students.
