The study and research of sociology at the Faculty of Social Sciences is influenced by the traditional "School of Vienna" that addresses social phenomena from a problem based, empirical, and practice-oriented perspective. Theoretical standpoints of the Viennese Circle such as logical empirism and social phenomenology are still prominent in research and teaching at the institute of sociology. The Faculty of Social Sciences in Vienna comprises seven research areas: family, generations and health prevention; gender and transformation; governance, democracy, and solidarity; knowledge societies in turbulent times; migration, citizenship and belonging; political parties, elections and representation; as well as visual studies in the social sciences. Besides the directors of studies sociology and the doctoral programme sociology there are three other directors of studies (Communication, Social and Cultural Anthropology incl. Gender Studies, and Political Sciences), that offer further BA nad MA study programmes at the Faculty. Please inform yourself about courses that Erasmus+ students may attend at the partner institution.
The BA Sociology offers a subject specific introductory phase covering fundamental knowledge of the Social Sciences and scientific research. The study programme not only emphasizes the application of qualitative and quantitative methods in the empirical social research, but also refers to legal and economic perspectives in various subjects as well as the acquisition of knowledge on a communicational and social level.
The MA Sociology also focuses on the application of qualitative and quantitative methods in empirical social research, and closely connects it to personal research projects.
