AVIKOM – A cognitive and mobile assistance system to provide individualized audiovisual action support in the modern working world

Project duration: 05/2019 – 04/2022

Changes such as digitalization and globalization as well as social developments such as demographic change are leading to profound changes in the world of work. The aim of the funding measure Zukunft der Arbeit: Mittelstand – innovativ und sozial, initiated by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), is to develop new concepts and tools for shaping and organizing work in and with SMEs.

The AVIKOM research project is developing an innovative audiovisual assistance system that can be individually adapted to the user and thus offers coordinated and adaptive support for a variety of activities. In this way, the burden on employees can be reduced and productivity increased. For this purpose, existing intelligent glasses initially developed in the ADAMAAS project will be enhanced by an acoustic system and adapted for industrial application. The system will be integrated into the existing working environment via specifically designed interfaces. Computer-aided tools for task-related cognitive assessment are used to identify individual issues in work processes. Based on diagnostic results, it is possible to provide appropriately coordinated and adaptive cues to support employees in carrying out their tasks in a goal-oriented and motivating manner. The technical implementation of the system is accompanied by psychological measures that ensure that the needs of the employees for the system are met and that the long-term acceptance of the system is guaranteed. To this end, the diagnostic approach also includes the analysis of the necessary skills of the employees to work with the audiovisual assistance system and recommendations on how these skills can be developed.

Four companies and another four associated partners bring in individual, clearly defined and recurring application scenarios: Together with Dreckshage, the researchers of Bielefeld University and the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences (FH Bielefeld) will investigate how AVIKOM can improve just-in-time delivery and assembly for the distribution of components, materials and manufacturing services. Euscher – a leading distributor of high precision deep drawn parts – strives for new incentives for their logistics workflow. Fischer Panda (portable electric drive systems) and mit Systemarmaturen (custom manufacturing solutions) will use AVIKOM to improve their remote support and employee coaching processes. The successful partnership of Bethel and Bielefeld University in ADAMAAS will be continued in AVIKOM to assure that the resulting system can be integrated into many fields of application. A core criteria will be the usability and acceptance of AVIKOM for a diverse range of users with varying requirements and expectations. Thus, AVIKOM may also enable novel forms of learning support for different target groups, for instance older people and employees with disabilities or migration background.

The project results will be prepared in the form of specific action recommendations for other possible scenarios in SMEs but also for transferring the gathered knowledge into other fields of applications. Together with our networking partners OWL Maschinenbau e.V., BOW and IHK Ostwestfalen zu Bielefeld we strive to give new incentives not just for our project partners, but for the whole OWL region of commerce and industry.
