New bicycle parking spaces at the Faculty of Medicine

The buildings of the new Faculty of Medicine are being constructed to the south of the main university building. Sustainability plays a central role in all construction phases and in the subsequent operation of the South Campus. A particular focus is on the area of mobility. Bielefeld University is focussing on a significantly improved cycling infrastructure to motivate students and employees to switch to bicycles.

In future, 191 new bicycle racks, five of which are covered and therefore weatherproof, will be installed close to the buildings. They offer secure and convenient parking facilities and thus increase the incentive to cycle to the university. This is complemented by the city of Bielefeld University's plans to improve the bicycle connection between the university and the city centre. To this end, a safe and high-quality cycle path is to be created between the city centre and Campus South.

The measure will not only contribute to the traffic turnaround, but will also have a positive impact on climate protection. Over a useful life of 25 years, around 124 tonnes of CO₂ are to be saved - that corresponds to around 5.2 tonnes per year. For comparison: one hectare of mixed forest binds around 6 tonnes of CO₂ per year.
