Bielefeld University stands for interdisciplinarity, high quality in research and teaching as well as for the further development of a gender-equitable university culture. A wide variety of subjects, perspectives and people work together to promote innovative and interdisciplinary research and teaching at the highest level. A differentiated range of subjects in the humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, technical sciences and medicine is open to the approximately 25,000 students. In addition to its international orientation, Bielefeld University is excellently networked in the medium-sized city and region.

The Faculty of Biology at Bielefeld University has a vacancy for a

W1-TT-W2‐ Professor for Ecology and Biodiversity

to be filled at the earliest opportunity.

The Faculty of Biology is looking for a promising early-career scientist to join and further strengthen the focus area of ecology and biodiversity in a changing environment in both research and teaching.

We expect:

  • an empirical research focus in ecology, in particular on the processes shaping biodiversity of plants, plants and interacting organisms, or biodiversity in general, and on the dynamics of biodiversity in a changing environment and landscape (both due to natural and anthropogenic causes)
  • a PhD in relevant fields
  • a strong publication record
  • ability to teach experimental and field ecology classes at all levels (in German and English). We expect the tenure-track professor to be able to teach in German in the undergraduate programmes within 2 years

In addition, we would welcome:

  • first experiences in applying and securing third-party funding
  • an experimental focus on biodiversity in the context of ecosystems
  • consideration of within-species variation (genetic, morphological, behavioural, chemical) in addition to species diversity and possibility to integrate into the JICE (Joint Institute for Individualisation in a Changing Environment)
  • ability to consider applied research questions on biodiversity in multifunctional environments and landscapes under human use and conservation biology preferentially at the field scale
  • contributions to innovative biodiversity and environmental management concepts / decision making
  • willingness and potential for interdisciplinary research, for example in urban ecology or in connection with social scientists or public health scientists
  • postdoctoral experience in relevant fields

The tenure-track professor will teach in the undergraduate study programmes “Biologie” and “Umweltwissenschaften” and in the international Master programme “Ecology and Environmental Change”.

The recruitment requirements are based on § 36 HG.

The appointment as a W1 professor is initially limited to 3 years, with the possibility of extension for a further 3 years after a positive interim evaluation. In the event of a positive tenure evaluation in the last year, the subsequent transfer to a permanent W2 professorship is planned. The interim/tenure evaluations are regulated in the statutes for quality assurance of professorships with tenure track (TT).

Tenure track professorships are firmly established as an equal appointment option at Bielefeld University. Tenure-track professors are offered a target group-specific personnel development programme that provides support during the arrival phase and in preparation for the interim and tenure evaluation.

Applications from suitable severely disabled people and disabled people of equal status are welcome.

Bielefeld University has received several awards for its successes in gender equality and is certified as a family-friendly university. We explicitly encourage applications from women, particularly for scientific positions. Applications are treated in accordance with the state law for equal opportunities. Family times will be considered in the context of the selection decision.

The Faculty of Biology considers gender equality to be an important task, in the implementation of which shall be supported by the future position holder. Bielefeld University supports dual-career constellations in creating a joint centre of work and life.

Applications should consist of: cover letter, curriculum vitae, list of research activities and third-party funding acquired, list of publications with identification of up to ten important publications, two-page research and teaching concept, list of courses held, copies of academic certificates.
