There are various exchange partnerships with the renowned university in Japan and there is the possibility for students of all departments to go to Japan for language acquisition.
The Alberta-OWL consortium consists of four universities from OWL (Ostwestfalen-Lippe, a region in Germany) and four higher-education institutions from Edmonton (Canada). All institutions work together to exchange and develop knowledge. The partnership focuses on close interdisciplinary collaboration in research, as well as the exchange of students and interns. This bilateral relationship between all participating partners serves to complement, combine and expand the strengths of both regions.

Bielefeld University and the Universidad de Guadalajara have been collaborating intensively since 2005 in the form of student exchanges, but also exchanges of teachers and scientists, which are supported through the International Study Partnership Program (ISAP). In the field of research, both partners have a coordinating role in a German-Latin American research center, the Merian Center for Advanced Latin American Studies (CALAS), which was established in 2017. It conducts research in the humanities and social sciences and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
Bielefeld University is part of the NEOLAiA network, an association of nine young, dynamically developing higher education institutions in different European regions beyond the metropolises. With a regional focus, NEOLAiA aims to create an open and inclusive educational and social environment that promotes equity at the university and in European society as a whole.
