Good teaching is crucial for students’ success. At Bielefeld University, good teaching means activating the student’s sense of personal responsibility. It also means taking each student seriously and treating them respectfully, irrespective of background, origin and interests, and acting in a fair and transparent manner. The time spent studying at university is a phase of intense personal development, in which Bielefeld University plays an active role. Teachers are role models, and convey values such as civil courage, respect, accountability and commitment.

With this understanding of teaching, Bielefeld University prepares students for careers in various professions on national and international job markets. In addition to specialist knowledge and methodological competence, research-oriented teaching develops critical and analytical thinking and increases the ability to reflect upon and solve problems. This motivates young people in all study phases to pursue an academic career. However, these skills prove to be extremely valuable in all other professional fields. For instance, the innovative, teacher training programme with its practical experience and research orientation prepares students for the real demands of the profession and contributes to the national reputation of Bielefeld University.

The Bielefeld study model is characterised by its exceptional transparency and permeability: With a large number of subject combinations and a uniform module size at Bachelor level, a broadly-based catalogue of elective courses and an interdisciplinary Master’s programme, Bielefeld University facilitates interdisciplinary teaching and learning. Thus, teaching at Bielefeld University meets the highest standards. In order to develop and maintain teaching at the highest level, additional resources for teaching are made available through the acquisition of respective funding. In addition, a tried and tested quality management system ensures a continual improvement in teaching. With specially developed programmes, teachers are supported with innovative ideas and concepts. In addition, numerous eLearning services provide tools for modern and media-supported teaching. The university provides teachers and students with a wide range of digital tools for organising courses, tutorials and examinations.

At Bielefeld University, study and teaching do not only take place in lecture halls. Well-designed learning spaces and the outstanding library also contribute to excellent conditions for studying at the University, as do a comprehensive range of advisory services and flat hierarchies between students and teachers. In this way, the University fosters independent learning: Students have the room to make their own decisions and choose their own thematic study focus. At the same time, they are expected to show commitment, use the offers of the University responsibly and are present at seminars and lectures.

Teachers also never stop learning: The University offers a wide range of continuing educational and qualification programmes as well as a number of advisory services to support teachers in their further development. Central to this is the exchange between teachers which takes place in an international and diverse working environment, where they can benefit from the wealth of experience of others.
