Professional Presentations at Conferences and in the Academic World

Contents:

This online workshop focuses on how scholars can best convey the value and significance of their work through oral communication, emphasizing not only typical structures of thought and expressions in English, but also an audience’s expectations. The focus of the workshop is on the formal conference panel presentation and the question-and-answer session, and includes sections on the presentation structure, take-home messages, attention-getting openers, and linguistic cues for the audience (signposting language).

Aims of the seminar:

After successful participation in the workshop, participants will have

  • learned the “golden rules” of presenting in English
  • created an attention-getting opener and strong conclusion for your presentation
  • practiced a concise yet captivating introduction of themselves and their research
  • learned how to develop a relaxed and personable, yet professional style with which you may better engage your listeners and communicate your ideas
  • created a two-minute presentation
  • discussed how to defend your research results during a question-and-answer practice session
  • learned and practiced special tips for delivering outstanding presentations on-line

Methods:

All participants will engage in the following exercises:

  • holding a two-minute presentation to get feedback on one’s verbal and non-verbal communication and to practice writing an abstract
  • crafting an attention-getting opening
  • developing a powerful conclusion
  • practicing answering questions about one’s research
  • delivering a one-minute introduction to one’s work for networking purposes (the “elevator pitch”

Target group:

PhD, postdocs and professors, max. 12 participants
