Since its foundation in 1973, the Department of History has stood for theory-orientated and research-strong historical studies. Its concept in research and teaching is characterised by theory and method orientation, the overcoming of traditional epochal divisions, a broad range of topics, interdisciplinarity and lively discussion.

Women’s and gender history at a time when democracy, diversity and responsibility are under threat
What is happening in the field of women’s and gender history in these politically challenging times? Which topics and questions deserve our attention, and which approaches and perspectives seem particularly fruitful? And where are we heading? These questions are at the heart of the conference, which will take place in Bielefeld in September 2026. Let’s talk.
Prof. Dr. Antje Flüchter elected Chairwoman of the Association of German Historians (VHD)
Prof. Dr. Antje Flüchter was elected today (19 September 2025) as Chair of the new Board of the Association of German Historians (VHD). The general meeting and election took place during the 55th German Historians' Day in Bonn.
