Knowing the three-dimensional structure of proteins is essential to understanding their function. We determine the three-dimensional structure of proteins and macromolecular complexes by X-ray crystallography. For functional characterization, we use biochemical and cell biological methods.
We focus on bacterial virulence factors and their interaction with host cells. Currently we work on components of the Yersinia enterocolitica type III secretion system and the Helicobacter pylori type IV secretion system. We also try to understand the structural basis of how the Listeria monocytogenes invasion protein InlB activates the human receptor tyrosine kinase MET.
