Institutions, Change Mechanisms and Impacts in Natural Resource Management of Central Asia (INRESCA)
Main Goals of the Research Project:
- Increase the robustness of natural resource governance in Central Asia and assist in generating broader insights into its evolution
- Study the institutional impacts on the natural resources of the region over a long period of time
- Evaluate the role of the collective upholding of social norms (civic-mindedness; second-order punishment) among both contemporary and preceding Central Asian resource users
- Add a contemporary element to the study (across all of its objectives).
Short Description of the Research Project
The aim of INRESCA is to better understand the institutional change in water and pasture governance, underlying change mechanisms and their impacts on resources and sustainability in a long-run evolutionary perspective. The project has three primary objectives that move inductively from a description to spatial-statistical inference to theoretical modeling. The first objective is to identify patterns of institutions and institutional change in water and pasture. The second objective is to assess the effects of institutions on natural resource endowment in a long-term perspective. The third objective is to explain why and how the institutional changes in Central Asian natural resource governance have occurred. The study conducts a cross-border comparison of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.
